MainNet, Token Minting, and TGE Explained; (Layer 1 Blockchains)
A Thread 🧵
1️⃣
A conversation in one of CoreNex WhatsApp groups made me realize a lot of people confuse these terms, especially MainNet and TGE.
MainNet is not TGE!
Let’s break them down so you never mix them up again.
What is MainNet?
MainNet is the official launch of a Layer 1 blockchain.
Once live:
-Transactions can occur.
-The native token becomes usable.
-Developers can deploy smart contracts.
-Consensus mechanism is active.
It’s the foundation of everything else.
What is Token Minting?
Token minting = the process of creating new tokens on the blockchain.
Before minting happens, teams define:
-Total supply, max supply, initial supply
-Tokenomics
-Vesting/locking rules
Then the tokens are minted into existence.
Types of Minting:
Pre-Minting: All tokens are created at once.
Dynamic Minting: Tokens are minted over time via staking (PoS) or mining (PoW).
What is TGE (Token Generation Event)?
TGE = When minted tokens are released to:
-Investors
-Founders/team
-Treasury
-Airdrop/community
It’s also when the token becomes tradable on exchanges.
This is the public launch of the token.
Key Flow (Layer 1 Only):
MainNet ➝ Minting ➝ TGE
-MainNet must go live before minting
- Minted tokens must exist before TGE
-TGE is the final step where tokens are distributed and listed
Can TGE happen before MainNet?
Yes, but only with placeholder tokens or IOU on other Networks.
These are swapped for native tokens once MainNet is live.
Ice Network Should come to Mind here.
MainNet = Blockchain is live
Minting = Tokens are created
TGE = Tokens are released to the public
Don’t confuse them.
Sequence matters.
Hope you all understand now? 😊
