What is it?
A Sybil Attack happens when one person (or computer) creates many fake identities to trick a network.
The Goal
The attacker wants the system to think they are 100 different people so they can have more power, vote multiple times, or spam the network.
The Name
It is named after a famous book about a woman named Sybil who had "Multiple Personality Disorder."
Real-Life Analogy
The Ballot Box: Imagine an election where one person puts on a different disguise (wig, glasses, mustache) and comes back to vote 50 times. To the poll worker, it looks like 50 different people voted, but it was actually just one cheater controlling the outcome.
Social Media Likes: Think of a person who creates 100 fake Instagram accounts just to "Like" their own photo to make it look popular.
Common Mistakes / Myths
Myth: "Sybil attacks are about stealing passwords."
Truth:No, itβs about spamming identities. The attacker isn't hacking you; they are hacking the system's trust.
Myth: "Blockchains can't stop Sybil attacks."
Truth:They can! That is why Bitcoin uses Mining (PoW) and Ethereum uses Staking (PoS). It costs too much money or electricity to create 1,000 fake identities, making the attack too expensive to be worth it.
