Crypto airdrops have become very popular lately as many people are being onboarded into web3 as a result, but not many understand the different types out there. A good knowledge of this will help you in positioning properly in order to make the most out of it, so let's dive right into this.

TYPES OF CRYPTO AIRDROPS

Crypto airdrops can come in different forms, depending on the intended goals of the project

Standard airdrop: In this type of airdrop, the users will receive free tokens without any required actions from you, this is usually employed when a project seeks to gain quick attention.

Bounty airdrop: Unlike the previous one, airdrop hunters or participants are required to complete easy tasks like sharing social media content or following channels to be rewarded with tokens in return. This helps increase the project’s social media presence and engagement

Holder airdrop: As the name implies, you are rewarded with tokens for holding another particular cryptocurrency. For example, the Airdrop tokens are distributed to holders of say; Ethereum or Bitcoin (BTC), and the quantity you will receive most depends on your wallet balance.

Exclusive airdrop: This type aims at a target audience or user group, e.g., loyal community members or early adopters of a project, to reward their engagement

NFT airdrop: Finally, in this type of airdrop, participants will receive non-fungible tokens or (NFTs), which in most cases, enables users to gain access to exclusive offers, giveaways or even events within the project's ecosystem.

Nowadays, many web3 projects have planned airdrops for their community as a way of onboarding many newbies into crypto and also as a way of getting social media attention and getting adequate funding from venture capital firms in order to pioneer their creative blockchain solutions.

A project like SpurProtocol for example has the potential to become one of the biggest bounty airdrops in this space because of their uniqueness and besides; they are creating pathways for revolutionary blockchain solutions.

CRYPTO AIRDROPS THAT MADE WAVES

Some of the most well-known crypto airdrops that made waves in this space include:

Bitcoin Cash (BCH) (2017)

Distributed tokens: 1 BCH per BTC

Highlights: This is an example of a holder airdrop, because BTC holders received the same amount of BCH after the Bitcoin blockchain split

Ontology (ONT) (2018)

Distributed tokens: 1,000 ONT for NEO holders

Highlights: This is a good example of holder airdrop because NEO holders received ONT as a reward due to the close connection between the projects.

Stellar (XLM) (2019)

Distributed tokens: 2 billion XLM

Highlights: Tokens were distributed via wallets and partnerships with platforms like Blockchain.com

Uniswap (UNI) (2020)

Distributed tokens: 400 UNI per wallet

Highlights: This is a good example of an exclusive airdrop as every participant who had utilised the uniswap platform before the airdrop received 400 UNI tokens as a thank-you for their support and many who held for a few years later made roughly $10,000 just for using a Dex.

Ethereum Name Service (ENS) (2021)

Distributed tokens: Varying amounts of ENS

Highlights: Those who registered ENS domains received tokens based on the duration of their activities and this again is another good example of an exclusive airdrop because a selected audience was rewarded because they showed support for the project by registering ENS domains.

In conclusion, airdrop types are many, the above few should get you started properly but there are risks and scams to be aware of and I explainedt hat in this video below
