Miners play a crucial role in cryptocurrency networks that use Proof-of-Work (PoW) consensus mechanisms, like Bitcoin.

Main roles of miners:

1. Verifying and Validating Transactions:

i). Miners verify the legitimacy of transactions by checking them against cryptographic signatures and the rules of the cryptocurrency protocol.

ii). They group confirmed transactions into blocks and add them to the blockchain, ensuring a permanent and immutable record of each transaction.

2. Securing the Blockchain:

i). The process of mining requires significant computational power and energy, making it difficult and costly for malicious actors to tamper with the blockchain or launch attacks.

ii). By competing to solve the mathematical puzzles, miners collectively secure the network against double-spending and other fraudulent activities.

3. Maintaining Decentralization:

I). Mining ensures that the blockchain remains decentralized, meaning no single entity controls the network or can manipulate transactions without the consent of the majority of miners.

ii). This decentralized nature makes cryptocurrencies resistant to censorship and manipulation by governments or corporations.

4. Adding New Cryptocurrency to Circulation:

i). As a reward for their work, miners receive newly minted cryptocurrency, which is added to the circulating supply.

ii). This process helps to distribute new coins among the network participants.

Validate Transactions: Miners group pending transactions into blocks and verify their legitimacy.

Add New Blocks: By solving complex cryptographic puzzles, miners compete to add their block to the blockchain.

Secure the Network: Their computational work makes it extremely difficult for attackers to alter the blockchain (e.g., via a 51% attack).

Earn Rewards: Miners are incentivized through block rewards (newly minted cryptocurrency) and transaction fees.

In short, miners keep the network decentralized, secure, and functional.
