WHAT IS WORMHOLE AND WHAT DOES IT DO?
Wormhole is a cross-chain interoperability protocol that allows assets, data, and messages to move between different blockchains. It’s one of the most widely used “bridges” in Web3, connecting dozens of ecosystems

Here’s a breakdown of what Wormhole is and what it does:
🔑 WHAT WORMHOLE IS:
A generic messaging protocol: Instead of only transferring tokens, Wormhole enables blockchains to exchange arbitrary messages (smart contract calls, governance votes, NFT metadata, etc.).
1. A bridge framework: It powers token bridges, NFT transfers, and cross-chain DeFi by using this messaging system.
2. A multi-chain network: Supports 20+ blockchains, including Ethereum, Solana, BNB Chain, Polygon, Avalanche, Cosmos chains, Aptos, Sui, and more.
HOW WORMHOLE WORKS
1. Guardians (Validators):
1. A set of independent nodes (currently 19, including names like Jump Crypto, Figment, Certus One, etc.) observe events on one chain.
2. They sign a message (called a VA — Verified Action) that confirms the event (e.g., token lockup on Ethereum).
3. This signed VA can be submitted to another chain to trigger an equivalent action (e.g., mint wrapped tokens on Solana).
MESSAGING LAYER:
1.Developers can send arbitrary messages(not just token).
2. Example: A lending protocol on Ethereum can update positions on solana via wormhole messages.
3. APPLICATION BUILT ON WORMHOLE:
1. Portal Bridge: A popular token bridge powered by Wormhole.
2. NFT Bridges: Moving NFTs between chains.
3. Cross-Chain Governance: DAOs can manage multi-chain treasuries.
4. DeFi Integrations: Liquidity sharing across ecosystems.
SECURITY:
1. Guardian Network: Security depends on the honesty of 13 out of 19 guardians.
2. Not Proof-of-Stake (like Axelar/Cosmos IBC): Instead, it’s a committee-based model.
3. History: Wormhole has had security incidents (notably the $325M exploit in Feb 2022, later covered by Jump Crypto). Since then, it has added more audits and monitoring.
USE CASES:
1. Cross-chain DeFi: Deposit collateral on one chain, borrow on another.
2. NFT Portability: Move NFTs from Solana to Ethereum marketplaces.
Cross-chain governance: DAOs controlling multi-chain deployments.
3. Game assets: Transfer in-game tokens/items between chains.
👉 In short: Wormhole is a messaging and bridge protocol that makes blockchains interoperable, supporting token transfers, NFT moves, and cross-chain dApps.
